NJF SEMINAR 477
Agromek and NJF joint seminar. Future arable farming and agricultural engineering.
Nov. 24 - 25, 2014 in Herning, Denmark
By arranging this agricultural engineering (AE) conference in advance of Agromek, the largest fair of machinery in the Northern part of Europe, the participants of the conference will achieve a lot of benefits additionally to a conventional conference. Briefly those are summarized here:
Several topics are covered during the conference, which should draw interest from all of us working within AE.
Innovation is a key issue for future farming and in pending research and it is a clear focus for this conference.
Participation as well as presentations from the AE manufactures and companies are welcomed.
The conference will highlight the common interest of AE from researchers and manufactures and aims to improve the level of AE education and AE consultancy within the Nordic Baltic countries.
At the end of the conference, the participants are offered free of charge to take part in special interest groups (SIG) visiting selected types of machinery at the fair, e.g. latest new equipment items in plant protection, safety, precision farming etc. Detailed information about the SIG groups will be announced together with the final program, closer to the conference.
Because of all these benefits, the NJF section of Technology and the chair of Agromek decided to arrange this conference in advance of the Agromek fair for this first time! We hope you also see all the benefits of such a combination and you are warmly invited to take part with a presentation or as an active participant. Together we can improve the future farming in our countries!
Professor Simon Blackmore, head of Engineering at Harper Adams University
Topics: Precision farming and smart machines.
Simon Blackmore has been a visiting professor at several European AE universities and has a long and broad expertize within these areas.
Dipl. Ing. Jens Fehrmann, Technische Universität Dresden
Topics: AET and the latest developments in Horizon 2020
Jens Fehrmann is a researcher at Technische Universität Dresden within Agricultural Systems and Technologies. General Secretary of the MANUFUTURE-Subplattform Agricultural Engineering and Technologies (AET), an important network for improving the connection between agricultural engineering scientists and the upcoming calls within the Horizon 2020.

Innovation and product design
Innovation processes are challenging because of demanding design requirements due to hard environmental conditions, seasonal work, user skills and ergonomic constraints. User-Centered or User-Driven innovation methods could be more used to improve the design. Status in Nordic Baltic Countries?
Robotics, sensors and Precision Agriculture
Agricultural robotics and intelligent machines. Sensors in practical use. State of art of precision agriculture and expected use for the next 10 years. Mission planning and route optimization. Parallel tracking and controlled traffic farming.
Data communications between agricultural systems
Open standards and interoperability for data exchange between systems like machines and management systems involving geo-spatial data infrastructures, data services accessible via standardized inter-faces and formats, web-services, ISOBUS, and development of network information model.
Farm management information systems
Data acquisition and information processing, decision support for operations optimization, data integration, distributed information management (cloud, Internet-of-things, etc.), advanced data acquisition on machines, integration with management systems.
Operation management and optimization
Resource usage, energy requirement, planning tools for machine dimensioning, scheduling and routing, planning and logistics in the supply chain, user-driven design of information’s system, information model-ing, system analyses and sustainability analyses
Advisory and consulting services
Advisory service level within AE in the Nordic Baltic countries and how to benefit and increase the quality in near future? Advisory services are especially invited to contribute. How can the conference and the Agromek fair interact in this context?
Education level within AE in the Nordic Baltic countries today? How to benefit and increase the quality in near future? Scientific people from universities and university colleges are especially invited to contribute. How can the conference and the Agromek fair interact in this context?
Soil protection and Machine Soil interaction. Presentation of research from the Nordic Baltic countries. Modeling of soil compaction. Machinery to reduce soil compaction. Decision support systems to predict and minimize soil compaction.
Plant protection machinery
Focus on inspection of sprayers, in use and new. Implementation of ISO and CEN standards, the Machine Directive (MD) and Sustainable Use Directive (SUD). Testing equipment; kind of equipment, requirements and control. State of art in different countries. How to improve networking and influence the standardization process. Manufacturers developments to fulfill the Directives and other modern developments.
Post harvest and logistics
Handling of biomass for storage, logistics for transport of biomass from site of harvesting to storage or processing facility, technology/sensors for monitoring storage over time, type of transport, quality of stored biomass.
Ergonomics & safety
Occupational safety and health situation in farms. Ergonomics of work needs to be considered as a chang-ing issue since agricultural work includes more and more information handling, monitoring of system per-formance and service. Use of external manpower and foreign workers challenge the working environment in the ever growing farms. This also has an effect on product development in agricultural engineering.
Improved energy efficiency in machinery and systems, energy efficiency measurements, effects of indirect energy inputs, farms self-supplying in energy, future technologies.
Environmental aspects and Climate neutral farming
Climate neutral farming, lowered machinery emissions, lowered system emissions, clean technologies, improved methodology for environmental evaluation.
